2019 Keynote Speaker
KEN SMITH is a corporate scientist named inventor on over 100 U.S. patents. In 2007, he was elected to 3M’s Carlton Society—the company's highest recognition—a hall of fame for scientists who have made extraordinary contributions to society.
Smith joined 3M in September 1982 after receiving his SB, SM, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He has worked since 1987 in the development and commercialization of retroreflective products such as road signs and pavement markings. Although this broad product family has been a constant focus over the years, the specific technologies and the resulting products have changed greatly, spanning the entire reflective products pyramid. Smith relocated to 3M’s European lab in 1995 for a two-year stint. More recently, Smith contributed to 3M's Connected Roads effort by developing infrastructure materials that serve both humans as well as connected and automated vehicles.
